NSW Tree Climbing Championship 11 – 12 March

Posted by on Saturday, 19 February, 2011

It’s on!  The New South Wales TCC is being run on the weekend of Saturday 12 March, and Victorian climbers are very welcome to attend.

There will be a workshop on the Friday, organised and run by four-times Australian tree climbing champion Brett Hamlin, so it will be well worth attending.

Entry is $150 for Arboriculture Australia members, and entry details will be posted on the Arb Aus website soon.  We hope it will be very soon in fact, as entries close on Fe5 25.

For now, you can download an entry form here.

Scott Sharpe’s truck and chipper for sale

Posted by on Tuesday, 1 February, 2011

Many thanks to all the Victorian tree workers, climbers and arborists who have pitched in over the last 6 months to help raise money for Scott’s family, left without him when he was tragically killed on Aug 5 last year.  For those of you who don’t know, the Yale SSharpe climbing rope that was designed by John Canning of ATRAES to help raise money for the family is now on sale from Cannings and through the ATRAES website, so if your climbing line is in need of replacement, now’s the time to invest in some of this great cordage.

If you are feeling like investing, then you might also want to look at Scott’s truck and chipper.  Both were second-hand when he bought them, but knowing Scott’s attention to detail they would have been the pick of the bunch.  The truck has been extensively modified, by Scott and to Scott’s designs, with a custom built body, tool boxes and mulch bin.  It’s a 4WD truck with a bull bar and winch, so it’s pretty capable off road as well as in the suburbs.  The chipper is a Vermeer BC1400, so a pretty good sized machine, with 3283 hours on the clock.

Olivia has worked out how much was spent on buying the truck and chipper, and then doing them both up, and the total comes to $75,000.  Not bad for a complete unit ready to go with all the extras – just add saws and crew!

SRT safety notes

Posted by on Tuesday, 16 November, 2010

Grant Harris of Canopy Access Ltd. has kindly put together a document giving guidelines as to some common mistakes made with Single Rope Technique, and showing how to avoid those risks.  Grant’s company is involved in canopy access work for scientists and film-makers all over the world, so he has logged a lot of vertical kilometres on SRT and he really knows his stuff.  In addition, Grant’s document also demonstrates several techniques for conducting an aerial rescue when the casualty is suspended on SRT gear.

You can download a copy of the SRT safety notes PDF here.

Climbers who are not familiar with Single Rope Technique may like to check out the SRT PDF that is available in the Downloads section.
