FALLING, REMOVING, AND CREATING HABITAT IN FIRE DAMAGED TREES

Practical Workshop

Friday 19th March Erica

Note: the workshop is taking place on Friday 19th, not on the Thursday as previously advertised

Following the disastrous fires in recent times in Victoria many arborists volunteered or were called on to assist in the recovery program. Assessing, falling and working on fire damaged trees requires specialist knowledge, skills and ability. This VTIO sponsored workshop with the assistance of The Department of Sustainability and Environment aims to share some of the knowledge and skills that can be utilized in similar situations.

Sessions will be run on the following topics.

  • Hazard Assessing Fire Damaged Trees.
  • The Basics of Safe Tree Falling.
  • Methods of SAFELY removing fire damaged trees.
  • Habitat Creation in Fire Damaged Trees.

Further details can be found on the Workshop page, here.  You can now register to take part in the workshop using the link below, but hurry because places are very limited.  We look forward to seeing you on the day!

Arborcamp 2010

Posted by Joe on Saturday, 13 February, 2010

The program for Arborcamp 2010 has nearly been finalised: from the 19th – 21st of March the VTIO will be hosting a range of activites, competitions, talks and events in beautiful surroundings, to which you and your friends and family are all invited.

It all starts on Friday the 19th March, with a series of workshops, talks and activities on Dealing with Fire-Damaged Trees.  At the same time, there will be a full program of children’s activities and of course the ever-popular big swing and crate-climbing.

On Saturday there will be more climbing workshops: Scott Sharpe will be running a workshop on SRT Systems, whilst Mark Haywood deals with the challenge of conducting a pole-rescue.  You can try your hand at a Masters’ Challenge in the VTIO Open Masters’ competition, or learn about planting and pleaching.  Of course, the kids are catered for with a full day of events and competitions.

The full program is now available here.  You can download the flyer here, or keep checking the Arborcamp page for more information.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The VTIO would also like to take this opportunity to thank our gold sponsor: Cannings Outdoor Power Equipment of Mt Waverley. Cannings has been a leading importer, manufacturer, distributor and retailer in the Outdoor Power Equipment Industry for over 45 years. They are importers and suppliers of high quality Yale ropes, world standard climbing gear and industrial height safety equipment and techniques.  Their sponsorship allows the VTIO to put on events such as Arborcamp and the annual climbing competition, and to continue to look for other ways of supporting the industry in Victoria.
